The Lantern::Chicago's Burning Man Newsletter::5.31.12::Community Grants Edition

Happy Summer!

It was fantastic to see everyone at the Meat'n'Greet and the Burlesque Bake Sale this past month. It takes more than some rain and/or a N.A.T.O. Summit to stop Chicago Burners!

This newsletter is undergoing a migration of editorship, and is a little tardy on May's edition. Sorry folks. We'll get this straight!

Here's what's up in this month's Lantern!

WHAT IS THE CHICAGO COMMUNITY GRANT PROGRAM?

This program engages grassroot programs being run in Chicago, or by Chicagoans.  Micro-Grants will help fund community projects that engage residents, produce direct action, create collaborations between different groups, utilize several of the 10 Burning Man Principles, and creatively tackle problems.  Micro-grants can be used for sustainable projects such as Neighborhood Cleanup, purchasing extra supplies for a homeless backpacking project, help fund a community kitchen, or buy paint to create a mural in a community.

The Micro-Grant Salon can serve a variety of purposes in a single evening:

* networking and the development of a shared vision

* sharing the table

* theater and immersion

* a means of participatory democracy

* a frame of reference for communities to connect and bond

* a setting for dynamic conversation and debate

* a chance to make a difference

HOW DOES THE SALON WORK?

Entrance to the Salon is $5, which buys you a plate for dinner (entree, salad, bread) and makes you eligible to vote.  The Salon is a semi-annual dinner and happening in the fall and in the spring. Interested participants are encouraged to submit their idea 4 weeks before the Salon.  All ideas submitted will be reviewed by the Micro-Grant committee.  Four participants will be selected to give  10 minute presentations at the Salon.  The selected projects will be announced 1 week before the salon.  Applicants must be present to pitch their ideas and be eligible.

The Salon opens at 6:30pm and the presentations begin at 7:30pm. Each presenter is given 10 minutes, and allowed to use visual aids.  After the presentations ,dinner is served and voting begins.  Each member at dinner may cast one vote.  The votes are tallied at 9:00pm, the winner is then announced and the money is presented.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?

Micro-granted projects must be based in Chicago.  Neighborhood groups, organizations, and grass root projects located in Chicago may apply. This includes–but is not limited to– block clubs, art groups, service organizations, citizen parks and recreational organizations, not for profits, and individuals.

HOW MUCH CAN YOU ASK FOR?

An applicant may request up to $1,000 dollars.  The program will be competitive and awards may be less than $1,000, depending on the will of the group.

BURLESQUE BAKE SALE - FUNDRAISING REPORT

The Burlesque Bake Sale came off beautifully on Saturday, May 19th.

We collected $465 at the door and $316 for the bake sale! After paying off a $60 "volunteer appreciation" bar tab, this little event raised $721!!! Thanks to the Green Door Tavern for its support!

We had a LOT of newbies and non-burners at the event too.

It was hella fun! Thanks to all who helped out!
